AATA offers a NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING TECHNOLOGIES CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

The Certificate Program introduces students to NDT Math and Advanced Non-Destructive Testing and Inspection disciplines: Advanced Radiographic Testing (RT) including Digital and Computed Radiography, Advanced Ultrasonic Testing (UT) including Phased Array and advanced phased array on Weld Inspection, in addition the curriculum includes Radiation Safety (Rad Safe) Penetrant (PT) and Magnetic Particle Testing (MT). It discusses the benefits and limitations of each method as well as an overview of the various discontinuities that may be encountered.



1. CERTIFICATION COURSE ON RADIOGRAPHIC INSPECTION AND TESTING

Radiographic Examination involves using radioactive isotopes (gamma rays) or X-rays in materials to peer qualitatively for indications the same way a doctor looks for fractures or other conditions within the body. Radiation is directed through a part and projected onto film or a digital detection device leaving an image that can be examined by the qualified Radiographer.
This course focuses on the theory and principles of radiation and their application to radiography. Subjects also included in this course include handling and processing radiographic film, radiography techniques, image quality, basic radiographic interpretation and the safe use of RT equipment. Both X-Ray and Gamma Ray sources are analyzed along with technique development guidance and advanced radiation safety.

2. CERTIFICATION COURSE ON DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY

The Digital radiography course is specifically designed to meet the aerospace industry’s demanding guidelines for digital radiography training and qualifications, including specific guidelines of the Metals Affordability Initiative (MAI), Federal Working Group on Industrial Digital Radiography (FWGIDR), and the Defense Working Group on Non-Destructive Testing (DWGNDT)

3. CERTIFICATION COURSE ON COMPUTED RADIOGRAPHY

This course offers technical and practical training highlighting industrial computed radiography utilizing micro-focus x-ray tubes and HD imaging plates. Students have access to a full radiography laboratory including a variety of x-ray sources and digital capture devices.

4. CERTIFICATION COURSE ON RADIATION SAFETY

Industrial radiography is designed to meet the training requirements for formal certification in Radiation Safety for both X-ray and gamma Radiographers. It also discusses the requirements of the Department of Transportation and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and outlines the “Suggested State Regulations for Controlling Radiation (SSRCR).” This course exceeds the recommendations and training outline set forth by the NRC training manual available as NUREG/BR-0024 Working Safely in Gamma Radiography and its subsequent ASNT revisions.

5. CERTIFICATION COURSE ON ULTRASONIC INSPECTION AND TESTING

This course includes a basic introduction to the theory and principles of ultrasound. It contains study materials related to the propagation, reflection, and attenuation of sound as well as the responses from discontinuities. The student will learn to understand the equipment used in this discipline and learn to calibrate instruments to identify and locate reflectors in various test specimens. UT is also used for precise thickness measurements and the basic procedure for this is covered.

6. CERTIFICATION COURSE ON ULTRASONIC PHASED ARRAY

This course covers the basic theory and equipment operation associated with phased array and is taught using portable phased array systems. This class covers the first half of the 80 hours of phased array training required by SNT-TC-1A and CP-189 and includes overviews relative to all industries.

7. CERTIFICATION COURSE ON ADVANCED PHASED ARRAY ON WELD INSPECTION

This is a class devoted to teaching the necessary principles needed to perform manual and encoded line scans of welds using the phased array technique. This class covers the second half of the required 80 hours of phased array classroom training as required by SNT-TC-1A and CP-189.

8. CERTIFICATION COURSE ON MAGNETIC PARTICLE

Magnetic Particle Examination is accomplished by inducing a magnetic field into a ferromagnetic material and applying iron particles to the surface of the item being examined. Surface and near-surface discontinuities affect the flow of the magnetic field within the part causing the applied particles to gather at locations of flux leakage, thus producing a visible indication of the irregularity on the surface of the material.

9. CERTIFICATION COURSE ON PENETRANT INSPECTION

This course is designed to meet the industrial qualification requirements for Penetrant Examination.
This method is used to locate surface discontinuities in non-porous materials. This examination is used to locate discontinuities including inherent, processing, and service defects.

10. NDT MATH

The course covers the fundamentals of each of the following topics. Fractions, Decimals and Percentages, Symbols and Measurement, Exponents and Scientific Notation, Order of Mathematical Operations, Basic Algebra, Multiply and Divide Algebraic Equations, Multi-Step Equations, Proportions, Logarithms, Trigonometry, Pythagorean Theorem, Sine, Cosine and Tangent, Inverse Trigonometric Functions, Circumference, Area, Volume and Geometry
